Thousands of Dominicans took to the streets of Dominica today, to participate in what is being dubbed as “D-Day of the People”. Protesters are calling for the resignation Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit and his entire cabinet based on information published in a report on social media that stated that PM Skerrit is under investigation by an unnamed agency in the United States, alleging that he facilitated the delivery of a diplomatic passport to a known international sanctions violator, Alireza Zabahalat Monfared, an Iranian national who was recently returned to Iran, and is reported to be facing criminal prosecution for the embezzlement of billions of dollars in state funds.
The Government of Dominica has since denied the social media reports that Prime Minister Skerrit was under investigation by United States law enforcement authorities, and blamed the main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) stating that it is apart of the UWP’s strategy to seize political control of Dominica.
The Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) joined with the United Workers Party (UWP) today to protest the sale of Dominican passports.
The UWP wants the Government to bring an end to the Dominica Citizenship by Investment Programme.
Dominica is one of several countries with a CBI programme. The others are Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts-Nevis, Grenada, and St. Lucia.
