About

I have always dreamt of owning a radio station, since I started as a disc jockey/newscaster at ZIZ Radio/TV in 1968 and went on to become the General Manager there in 1995 – 2000. Radio has always fascinated and inspired me. I have put in endless hours of love and sacrifice at ZIZ Radio, Sugar City Roc, VON Radio (Nevis) and done stints on ABS in Antigua, ZDK, Radio Anguilla and WLIB in New York. Freedom Radio became a reality on August 30, 2010. It was just 2 years ago, that I shared my feelings with Leslie “Sugar Bowl” Morton – another born radio man. His response was positive and confirmed my belief that together with Sister Sensia and E.K, we could transform the broadcasting landscape in St. Kitts and Nevis. The name Freedom FM came out of my black conscious nationalist African roots that speak to liberation and empowerment of black people.

Since coming “on air” Freedom FM has showcased an overwhelming brilliant professionalism of world class radio that has captivated the St Kitts-Nevis, Caribbean, and North American radio market!! A cursory look at the numbers and demographics attest to the fact that Freedom has arrived…and is here to stay! The online/mobile numbers are spiralling upwards on Sugar Bowl’s “Freedom Morning Express” train from 8 am to 12 noon recording huge online numbers. E.K’s “Island Riddims” from 3 – 6pm takes soca to a higher level. By the time Sweet Sister Sensia comes on from 6:30 pm to 9 pm with her blend of R&B, Reggae, Hip Hop…the masses have simply “locked into Freedom FM…and nar go no way!!”

Freedom FM has island wide coverage in both St. Kitts and Nevis and is heard also in the neighbouring islands of Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Barths, Montserrat and St. Maarten. But it is our distinctive fresh and crystal clear digital stereo sound that makes the people ROCK to the sweet sounds of Freedom at 106.5 FM and online. Our rich variety of music programming and talk shows, news, live shows and community vibes, in particular “Freedom Talk” on Wednesdays at 7 pm to 9:30 pm and “Issues” 1 pm to 2 pm daily, reflect and consolidate freedom of speech that ensures nation building. At Freedom FM our mandate is to serve our people with dignity and pride.

The management and staff at Freedom FM cherish and exalt the lofty principles and practices of professional journalism…But never compromise on the values and traditions of our African-Caribbean heritage which define our existence and way of life. It is our music that we play here at Freedom FM from Reggae and Soca to Dance Hall and Hip Hop to Latin, Soul, Disco, Gospel, Zouk, Jazz….the entire spectrum of black music!! Freedom FM is committed to giving maximum prime time exposure to our national music, artistes, culture and traditions. It’s in our news and talk shows that are people-focussed and community-oriented which spring from a reservoir of electronic and print media that define what people hear, see and think. Freedom FM simply gets the message out to our people in music, news, press conferences, festivals, carnivals, bashments, internet, facebook, advertising. It’s what we do for life…for living. We share it with all of our people.

That’s why the Freedom Dream team – Leslie “Sugar Bowl” Morton, Michelle “Sweet Sister Sensia” Stokes, Maurice “E.K da Real Right” Flanders, Kenisha “Lady K” Isles, and Juni “Big JL” Liburd – have come together at this time of our history. It’s a celebration of our advancement in broadcasting and journalism. And with the health, guidance and blessings of Almighty Jah and the support and love of family, friends and fans Freedom FM will lead the way and take broadcast journalism to a higher level in St. Kitts/Nevis.

It’s simply “WORLD CLASS RADIO AT ITS VERY BEST!!” SELAH…
