St. Kitts is under pressure over whale meat transport

Whaling-1An international online campaign network with some 41.5 million members all over the world, has started a protest action to convince the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis to remove the lag of a cargo ship that is carrying more than 1,700 tonnes of whale meat from Iceland to Japan.

Avaaz has started an online petition to put pressure on St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Timothy Harris to remove the flag from the cargo vessel Winter Bay.

Without a flag, the ship, which carries Iceland’s entire catch from 2014 whaling season, cannot continue its journey to Japan via a passage between Russia and the North Pole.

Tourism is the main pillar of the St. Kitts and Nevis economy, Avaaz stated. “We can put the country’s reputation on the line by throwing them into our giant global spotlight. Let’s now get St. Kitts to stop helping the whalers.”

Up until Friday evening, some 200,000 persons from around the world had signed the petition.

Avaaz promised to deliver the voices of the petitioners to Prime Minister Harris. “And, if he doesn’t respond quickly, Avaaz will target his biggest tourist marker – the United States- and show how St. Kitts is supporting the slaughter of these majestic beings.”
