St Kitts Diabetic Association Targets School Children in Screening Exercise

April 27, 2017 in National

The St Kitts Diabetes Association in collaboration with the St Kitts and Nevis Red Cross Society, is carrying out a screening exercise at the Beach Allen primary school, on Thursday 27th April as part of a program to determine the magnitude of the diabetes problem amongst our young people.

And that’s according to its PRO Dr Reginald O’Loughlin who told Freedom Fm News that the Association is on a proactive campaign at the Beach Allen Primary School, the Washington Archibald High School and other schools in the federation.

The age group to be targeted, is the 10-12 year range. This is a continuation of a project, started in 2016 ,when all of the high schools on St kitts were visited and screened.

The diabetes association is endeavoring to increase the awareness of diabetes throughout the population, mainly because it is felt that with lifestyle changes, the problems and complications linked to the disease can be significantly reduced.

DR Oloughlin pointed out that it is the overall goal and objective to change the consumption patterns of the children and their parents to enable them to be more conscious of what we eat and drink.

He welcomed any assistance from groups and organisations, as this would enhance the ability of the association in its goal to impact in a positive way, the statistics relating to diabetes.
