Prime Minister Hon. Timothy Harris

Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Dr Timothy Harris at Tuesday’s sitting of the National Assembly announced that the long awaited PAC will finally be established.

The PAC will be set up shortly and will be comprised of 2 members nominated by the Opposition SKNLP and 3 members nominated by the TUG. Dr Harris further signaled that the PAC will be chaired by an Opposition member.

Dr Harris further revealed that once the nominees are accepted, he would move a resolution to the National Assembly for approval of the PAC.

Dr Harris opined that there was no significant history on the functions and activation of the PAC, so a fresh start was needed. Insert. A public accounts committee plays a big role in public sector accountability.

It examines the government’s use of resources and the financial operations of state agencies.

It also looks at both financial probity and regularity and focuses on whether agency programs are achieving their overall objectives.

The Opposition SKNLP has charged that the TUG is rushing to have the PAC in place ahead of a Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference in St Kitts in June.
