Amidst the savoury jerk offerings at the Mobay Jerk Festival on Emancipation Day, fast-rising dancehall star Popcaan was the most anticipated ‘menu’ item.

The former Portmore Empire artiste delivered on all the expectations. The sizeable crowd on hand just could not get enough of the Unruly Boss as he delighted with one hit after the other, including Never Sober, Give Thanks and Where We Come From.

Popcaan, easily the most exciting act for the night, engaged his audience with onstage banter and his now signature slang “Kick out, far out”, ending the sixth staging of the festival on a high.

Earlier standout performances came from Devin the Dakta and Innovata of Magnum Kings and Queens fame, who had the crowd erupting and signalling ‘forwards’ for their witty lyrics and onstage antics.

Ikaya, the lone female artiste for the night, brought energy and connected with the audience. Her songs covered topics ranging from relationship issues to social commentary.

Meanwhile, Montego Bay-based artistes Teejay and Chilando gave a good account of themselves, justifying their inclusion into the line-up and why they are among the most respected artistes in western Jamaica.

The gospel segment, which kicked off the night’s proceedings, saw good stints from Goddesta and Kukudoo, who brought a revivalist vibe that had the crowd dancing to his songs.

During the day patrons were entertained by the on stage theatrics of MC DJ Blaze, ‘juggling’ by DJ Shem and Black President, the Courts Treasure Hunt, Tropicana Tropics Kiddes Village and Best Dressed Chicken Celebrity Cook Off also found favour with patrons.
