Earthquake shakes parts of Lesser Antilles

earthquakeFORT-DE-FRANCE, Martinique, Monday December 28, 2015 – Residents of Martinique, St. Lucia and Dominica have reported feeling a 5.5 magnitude which occurred in the early hours of this morning.

According to the University of the West Indies’ Seismic Research Centre (SRC), the quake occurred at a depth of 147 km, just nine km northwest of the capital of the French Caribbean island; 69 km north northwest of Castries, St. Lucia, and 78 km south southeast of Roseau, Dominica.

The shaking occurred around 2:55 a.m.

In comments on the SRC’s Facebook page, people living in St. Vincent, Grenada and Trinidad said they had also felt the tremor.

Last Tuesday night, a 4.1 magnitude quake occurred 11 km west northwest of Point-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe; 96 km south southeast of St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda; and 111 km north northwest of Roseau, Dominica. The depth of that tremor was 142 km.
