A national visiting from Canada has given an eye witness account of a gang war between youths on Port Zante on Friday 25th July.

Calvin Beach in a posting on the skn@yahoogroups chat list said he witnessed the warfare while “sipping a cold one and catching up on family matters” when other patrons at the bar shouted ‘look, look.’

“A pack of youngsters, about 10 to 12 of them, all look to be in the 16 to 20 years age range, were chased by a similar-sized pack of youngsters coming from the Treasury end (National Museum) of Port Zante and running eastwards across one of the crossing roads,” detailed Beach.

Mr. Beach added: “Both packs (gangs) were armed with machetes and what appeared to be iron and wooden implements. The chasing pack was about to catch up with the lead pack when 4 or so army/police personnel with long guns arrived on the scene and corralled the chasing pack.”

“It appeared that several members of the chasing pack were apprehended,” wrote Beach.

He disclosed that the “few people in the bar were really annoyed with these young men. They (patrons) were shouting at the army/police personnel ‘Shoot them, shoot them’.”
