On Friday May 5th, Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition in St. Kitts and Nevis and former Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas, in the wake of a mounting scandal involving allegations surrounding current Prime Minister Dr. Timothy Harris, has called for the removal of the sitting prime minister.

Dr. Douglas charged that “Prime Minister Harris’ refusal to cooperate with the Chinese authorities and Interpol, his government’s deliberate misleading of the citizenry in relation to this disreputable matter, and his rejection of the media’s request for him to bring clarity to this matter once and for all imply that the Prime Minister and the government that he leads either have something to hide or are grossly negligent and derelict in the conduct of his duties towards the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The longest-serving Prime Minister of the twin-island Federation demanded “the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Harris for his deliberate misleading of the people of this country, for his refusal to cooperate with Interpol and his flouting the principle of the comity of nations, and for his failure to explain why a Chinese fugitive would need US$190,000 to finance his continued protection from the authorities in St. Kitts and Nevis.”

On Sunday evening, opposition MP representing West Basseterre came out swinging on Kyss FM, laying out the charges that have racked up against Prime Minister Harris in the two and a half years he has held the headship of the Federal Government in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Significantly, Maynard who was strident in his tone and focused in his castigation of Prime Minister Harris reiterated the demand made by Opposition Leader the Rt. Hon. Dr. Douglas for the immediate resignation of Harris.

Maynard litigated that there is no good or sensible reason why the Prime Minister (also Minister of National Security and Minister responsible for the country’s Citizenship By Investment [CBI] Programme) continues to refuse to cooperate with international agencies and one of the world’s most powerful nation, China, in a clear case of serious allegations against a Chinese fugitive hiding out in St. Kitts whom certain government officials are being paid to corruptly protect.

Questioning whether the Police Force has now been fully corrupted by Harris, Maynard said that the country could not continue to exist under a dark cloud and resounded the call for Timothy Harris to rid the country of the threat of economic decay and diplomatic isolation posed by his persistence in government. He demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Timothy Harris.
