Douglas-1BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party has reiterated its determination to remain steadfast with zeal and interest in ensuring that teachers in the Federation get the praise and respect that they truly deserve.

“Their contributions to nation building is full of sacrifices and love for our nation. Today, we say thank you to our Teaching Stars and we pause to respectfully salute you on this well deserving and highly celebrated World Teachers Day,” said the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, Leader of the Opposition and National Political Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party.

In a message to the teaching fraternity to mark the 50th Anniversary of the adoption of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the status of Teachers and the initiation of World Teachers Day by UNESCO, Dr Douglas noted that the chosen theme of “Valuing Teachers, Improving their Status” highlights the monumental contributions teachers have made to the development of mankind.

“Without teachers the knowledge and expertise required to make things happen at such a rapid rate would be nonexistent,” he said.

The former prime minister noted that the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party continues to recognize, support and respect the entire Teaching Fraternity here in the Federation.

“We also stand in accordance with UNESCO’s recognition of valuing the rights, responsibilities, international standards, preparation, further education, recruitment and selection, teaching and learning conditions,” said Dr. Douglas.

He added: “We also stand up firmly against the uncaring and heartless treatment meted out to our Teachers by the Team Unity Government who has no respect or regard for the Teaching Profession.

Since taking office near two (2) years ago, we have seen and witnessed numerous human rights violations, victimizations, unnecessary transfers, changes in vacation privileges without notice, decentralized teaching locations at the Basseterre High School and in some instances a blatant disregard for decency and due process when dealing with our noble Teachers.”

Dr. Douglas continued: “The very fact that Teachers have been disallowed to enjoy Teachers’ Day 2016 away from work and engage in their customary activities in solidarity on this day is a gripping testimony that our Teachers have been seriously discounted and deliberately undervalued by the Hon Dr. Timothy Harris led Concoction Administration and the incompetent Minister of Education, Hon. Shawn Richards.”
