Denzil Douglas+Konris Maynard-1Opposition Member of Parliament Honorable Konris Maynard calls on team Unity Government to bring Term Limits issue to the people of St. Kitts-Nevis and let them decide.

Maynard made the call on the popular talk show Issues on Freedom Fm on Wednesday.

Maynard said the original bill calling for term limits included a section which gave parliament the authority to remove a sitting Prime Minister.

He further indicated that the new episode of the bill as presented in parliament 2 weeks ago, does not include that section anymore although it is referred to in the new bill.
Maynard declared that the bill is to satisfy supporters who wanted to prevent the former Prime Minster Dr. Denzil Douglas from ever returning to power as Prime Minister of St. Kitts-Nevis.

Maynard referenced the article written by Peter Wickham, the Barbados political consultant, who in an article in the Barbados Nation indicated that the term limit bill was part of a constitutional reform measure initiated by the Team Unity Government.

Wickham argued that the term limit bill would effectively prevent Dr. Douglas from ever returning as Prime Minister.

However Maynard argued that the bill is to have constitutional validity between the people who are the arbiters of democracy and that the court must have the final say in this matter.

Meanwhile on Working for You on Wednesday the featured guest Attorney General Vincent Byron agreed that the people would be consulted in the process of enacting legislation on term limits but also the Freedom of Information bill and the Integrity in Public Lifestyle would be put in place to ensure good governance and accountability.

However Opposition Leader and former Prime Minister Douglas also weighed in on the matter of term limits for a Prime Minister.

Douglas said it was the people who must decide how long a Prime Minister would serve, whether one term or six terms and that it was their democratic right.
