Acting Commissioner of Police Stafford Liburd is dismissing the charge by Opposition Senator Nigel Carty that there is a under-reporting of crime in the Federation.

On Freedom FM’s popular talk show ISSUES last week, Senator Nigel Carty indicated that the government is engaged in a massive cover up of major gun related crimes in SKN.

“There are major crimes happening every day in this country and the government has sought rather than to come out and to say to people that we have these issues, and let us get together and find real solutions for these problems, the government has opted to engage in a public relations stunt to fool people about what’s happening in our country,” Senator Carty said.

On Saturday, Acting Commissioner of Police Stafford Liburd while speaking to WINN Fm dismissed Carty’s allegations and said he was not involved in covering up crime in SKN. Liburd pointed out that PM Harris, who is also Minister of National Security had instructed the police to reveal the crime stats.

“I’ve not received any instruction, I have not given any instruction, I am not party to any system of covering up crime in St. Kitts and Nevis,” the Acting Commissioner said.

“We do have a Public Relations Department. We are seeking to improve its performance and reporting of crime to the public. Yes, there is need for us to be more proactive, and we’re moving in that direction of reporting not only crime but other matters regarding policing in the country. That is our role,” he said.
