KINGSTON, Jamaica, Monday September 5, 2016 — A Canadian woman is expected to appear in court this week after detectives charged her with allegedly ordering the contract killing of her estranged Jamaican husband.
The accused, 56-year-old Monique Cooke-Reid, a retired psychologist from Ontario, was charged last week with soliciting to commit murder.
Her estranged husband, Jamari Reid, 25, was gunned down execution-style at his home in Falmouth, Trelawny, on August 24. The victim, a dancehall entertainer, was reportedly in the company of two friends when they were attacked by two armed assailants around 10 p.m. The intruders tied up Reid and his companions before shooting him dead.
Neighbours called the police, who found Reid’s body in a pool of blood with his hands and feet bound. He had been shot multiple times. Cooke-Reid who, according to a police source, had repeatedly threatened her estranged husband, was subsequently arrested.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Ealan Powell recently expressed concern about the increased number of contract killings in Jamaica.
