More than 100 people have been evacuated after a sinkhole the size of a football pitch swallowed tents at a campsite in Australia.

Emergency services helped campers flee the site near Queensland’s Rainbow Beach when the 450ft-wide hole appeared on Saturday night.

It swallowed a mobile home, a car, a camping trailer and a number of tents, but there were no reports of injuries.

Camper Darren Chilton said: “We got woken up and they told us to get out and have a look so we got out and, yeah, got the car and the boat out and slept on the road last night.

“We came back in and, yeah, the tent was still there luckily but next door lost their camper, it’s in the water.”

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services (QPWS) said the 9ft-deep hole engulfed most of the MV Beagle campsite.
