NBA trade deadline: Cavaliers trade Dwyane Wade back to Heat, report says

February 09, 2018 in Sports

The experiment that was “Peanut Butter and Jelly 2017-18” has come to an end as Dwyane Wade reportedly is on his way back to Miami.

Dwyane Wade always loved Miami, and now he is on his way back.

According to ESPN, the Cavaliers have traded Wade to the Heat for a heavily protected second-round pick in 2020. The draft pick will then be shipped to the Kings as part of the George Hill trade Cleveland executed earlier in the day.

Cleveland already had acquired Rodney Hood, Hill, Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr. on Thursday ahead of the 3 p.m. ET trade deadline, and with those additions Wade was getting pushed further down the depth chart on a manic deadline day.

At 36, Wade already was playing limited minutes this season as his 23.2 per game and three starts are both career lows, and with his trade to Miami he may get more of a chance for playing time. He also will have an easy path to retiring as a member of the Heat.

At least one huge Wade fan was happy about the trade: his wife, Gabrielle Union, who tweeted that the move allowed them to go “HOME” but thanking fans in Cleveland for “treating our family like family.”

According to ESPN, the “home” angle was much of the reasoning behind the trade.

As Cleveland remade its roster with young, athletic wing players, organization gave him a chance to return home to Miami and worked out a deal to send him back to the Heat, league sources tell ESPN.

Wade is averaging a career-low 11.2 points on the season.
