Fireman Shot to Death In Sandy Point, Shots Ring Out In Nevis

Javier Caines-1The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) is currently investigating a shooting incident in Sandy Point that resulted in the death of one (1) person and gunshot injuries to another. The shooting occurred at around 10.30pm on Saturday (March 05).

Initial investigations revealed that the victims were shot in the Farm Site area by an unknown assailant(s). One died at the scene and the other was taken to the J. N. France General Hospital for treatment. According to multiple reports, the former Fire and Rescue Services officer Javier Caines was seated in his car when he was shot multiple times by an armed gunman. It is being reported that two other men, namely Alfred Brown of St. Pauls village and Kelvis Belle of Middle Island, both friends of the victim were also in the vehicle when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Investigators from the Violent Crimes Unit and the Criminal Investigations Department and technicians from the Forensics Services Unit have canvassed the scene for evidence. One person is currently in custody and is assisting with the investigation. The investigation is ongoing.

Commissioner of Police Mr. Ian M. Queeley, has echoed an appeal for assistance from the public. Commissioner Queeley said, “We urge anyone who may have witnessed or have knowledge about this incident last night to come forward with any information they may have. What you may have seen or perceived with your other senses, may be critical to our investigators bringing closure to this crime and justice for the families. Persons with information that can assist the police in this crime, or any other crime can call any Police Station in the federation or Crime Stoppers, our confidential hotline, at 1-800-8477 to share information,” stressed Commissioner Queeley.

Meanwhile On Friday March 4, 2016 shots rang out in close promixity to Octagon Restaurant on the Samuel Hunkins Drive in Nevis. According to the police, the altercation is said to have occurred around 9.00pm in Charlestown Nevis. Reports are that Darnell Morton was out enjoying the night with his girlfriend. A masked gunman emerged chasing another individual while firing a hail of bullets. In a panic, the couple ran for cover and took shelter in their car, but were not shielded form the fire. A stray bullet struck Morton in his right shoulder and another bullet struck the car window. He is currently warded at the Alexander hospital with a broken bone in his right hand.

Due to the increase presence of the security forces on St. Kitts and Nevis in the last month, the police gave chase and the shooter was apprehended while attempting to escape the Ramsbury area. During a police search of his person, it was discovered that he had in his possession a .45mm pistol and matching rounds of ammunition. Police said they also confiscated the weapon involved in that shooting. The police said that find took the total number of illegal weapons taken off the streets to six so far this year.
