In Nov. 2008, Phillip was convicted for the brutal slaying of his then 26-year-old estranged wife Shermel Williams-Phillip on February 16, 2007 in the yard of her home in Brown Hill Village, Nevis. Her throat was slashed, as she sat at the wheel of her car, preparing to head off to a farewell party at Mango Restaurant at the Four Seasons Resort, for her retiring manager.
He was sentenced in Dec. 2008 to life in prison.

The Phillip family has engaged the services of Simons, Muirhead and Burton, solicitors in the UK, while St. Kitts-Nevis Director of Public Prosecutions Valston Graham and Special Prosecutor Dane Hamilton of Antigua and Barbuda have travelled to London to represent the Crown.

The murder of Williams-Phillip, who worked in Conference Services Department at the Four Seasons Resort, and the subsequent arrest of Phillip, a revered sportsman, shocked the nation.
