August 02, 2017 in National

A call has been made by VH Communications founder Val Henry for the recognition and commemoration of August 1st as Emancipation Day, the day slavery was abolished in St Kitts and Nevis.

Henry told freedom Fm news desk on Wednesday that there is no august Monday on august 1st and that rather it should be emancipation day which was proclaimed back in 1834.

Henry said it was a failure by successive national governments not to put something in place and proclaim august 1st as emancipation day.

Henry observed that many Kittitians who woke up on august 1st did not know it was emancipation day.

He further stated that he had already written to the team unity government and private sectors to bring St Kitts and Nevis up to date with other countries such as Jamaica, Barbados, St Lucia and Bahamas where emancipation day is officially recognized as critical to black nationalists independence and empowerment.
