Two Drown at Keys Beach during Sunday Swim

A grandfather 71 year old Adolphus "Dappa" Stevens and his great nephew, 8 year old Niquan Powell of Keys drowned tragically at Keys Beach and a little girl was rushed to the hospital by Emergency crews on Sunday morning sometime after 11 am.Mr.Stephens is accustomed to taking his great nephew and a little girl to the beach,which runs through Canada Estate to Keys Village.

Apparently,the three sea bathers were pulled out to sea by the undertow of the Atlantic ocean,and were observed in great difficulty. The little girl was rescued and taken to the JNF Hospital by ambulance, and it appeared that she had taken in a lot of water. Mr. Stevens was found dead on the shore by Ross University students  and the young boy,Niquan Powell, was finally found at the bottom of the ocean in 15-20 feet of water and some 150-200 yards from the shore at 4 pm.

Crowds gathered at the scene all Sunday as the news of the drowning incident spread throughout the island. PRO of the Royal St.Christopher-Nevis Police Force issued this report to the public:

Cayon Police responded to a reported drowning of a St. Peter's resident in the sea water in Keys, about 12:25 pm today (9/9/12). Reports indicated that 71 years old Adolphus Stevens drowned in trying to look for a missing local youth who was having difficulties swimming.

According to eyewitnesses two (2) Ross University students assisted in the recovery of Mr. Adolphus Stevens' body. Next of kin has been notified.

The body of the adolescent has just been recovered but name will be released pending notification of next of kin.
